The old "Brown family" log cabin, where Rebecca raised her children and began compiling her instructions for The Complete Book of Macra-Tack. Sadly, the cabin burned down years after Rebecca moved. "Becky's Kitchen" by Pamela K Wilhelm, 1981.

It all started in a one room cabin in Montana.

UBI founder Rebecca Morgan-Albertson grew up with ponies and horses. She wanted to be a veterinarian, but her grandmother encouraged her to study nursing instead. After graduating in Ohio, she moved to Northern California, then in 1975, she relocated her family to Western Montana’s Bitterroot Valley, ideal for raising her family and breeding Anglo-Arabians.

Life was not easy, and raising her three children alone while working away was challenging.

She used to dream of ways to quit her nursing career so she could stay home with her kids. "I'd imagine devices in my head I believed would help the medical field, but those ideas never materialized. One day, I picked up a copy of Mother Earth News and saw an ad promoting the idea that anyone could make money through the mail."

It was around that time that Rebecca discovered one of her favorite leather bridles in the manure pile left there by her kids. That moment motivated her to start the next chapter of her life. With a growing herd of horses and young, forgetful children, it became her goal to make her own tack and teach her children along the way, hoping they'd learn an important lesson about caring for their tack.

Outfitted with used parachute cord from the nearby Smoke Jumper's School and a copy of Bruce Grant's Encyclopedia of Rawhide and Leather Braiding, Rebecca adapted leather braiding techniques to parachute cord—this was the solution to her needs! The tack was not only economical to make but also strong and practically carefree.

She started making many tack items, and those who saw her work encouraged her to write a how-to book. In 1982, she published The Complete Book of Macra-Tack. Sales continued through six editions until it went out of print. Rebecca's daughter, Cybèle, became interested in braiding at an early age, began designing her own tack, and offered how-to projects for sale.

In 1996, the mother-daughter team published a new book, "How to Braid Quality Custom Tack," and established themselves as a comprehensive source for braiders, known as U-BRAID-IT Braiding Supply Co. Cybèle and Rebecca have been running the company ever since.

It makes us truly happy to have motivated so many individuals to start their own custom tack businesses.
